Handling practices for the solid material emphasise low temperature and dryness. The lyophilised or powdered form is typically kept at refrigerator or freezer temperatures together with a desiccant. Working solutions are often prepared fresh, because repeated freeze-thaw cycles and extended storage may alter the complex. Glass or inert plastic containers are preferred over materials that could leach metal ions into the preparation. Such practices follow general peptide conventions rather than substance-specific regulations.
Analytical verification commonly relies on high-performance liquid chromatography for purity assessment and mass spectrometry for identity confirmation. Spectroscopic methods such as UV-visible absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance can probe the metal centre itself, since the d9 configuration of copper(II) produces characteristic signals. Elemental analysis or plasma-based techniques quantify copper content. Because each method reports a different aspect of the same sample, purity figures are most meaningful when the technique and its detection wavelength are stated alongside the value.
Stability of the complex in solution depends on pH, temperature, and the presence of competing ligands. It is generally described as more resistant to breakdown than the metal-free chain, since coordination reduces susceptibility to enzymatic attack. Oxidation and hydrolysis can nevertheless proceed over time in aqueous media. Storage guidance in laboratory settings commonly involves refrigeration, protection from light, and avoidance of strongly alkaline conditions. Published data on long-term behaviour vary considerably and depend on the specific matrix.
The International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients lists the substance as copper tripeptide-1, the name that appears on most topical product labels. Related designations include copper peptide and GHK-Cu, and the hyphenated form is common in research literature. In cosmetics the material is regulated as an ingredient rather than as a drug, so products may reach the market without evidence of the effects claimed for them. Whether those effects are clinically meaningful is an open question, since most supportive data come from laboratory work and small trials.
GHK-Cu is the copper complex of the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine, a short sequence found naturally in human plasma, saliva and urine. Loren Pickart reported the isolation of the free peptide in 1973 while studying factors that influenced the growth of aged liver cells in culture. The peptide was later shown to bind copper(II) with high affinity, and the metal-bound form became the focus of most subsequent research. Its concentration in circulation declines markedly with age, a pattern that is well documented, though the physiological consequences of that decline remain debated.
The peptide portion consists of three amino acids: glycine, histidine and lysine. Copper(II) coordinates through the imidazole nitrogen of histidine, the alpha-amino group of glycine and a deprotonated amide nitrogen of the backbone, producing a roughly square-planar geometry. This arrangement gives the complex its characteristic blue-to-violet colour and helps it resist dissociation in water. Reported stability constants are high, although values differ between studies because of differences in ionic strength and measurement method.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Blue crystalline solid | Colour arises from copper(II) d-d transitions |
| Water solubility | Readily soluble | Extent varies with pH and counterion |
| Typical storage | Minus 20 degrees Celsius, desiccated | Protect from light and moisture |
| Purity method | Reverse-phase HPLC, UV detection | Wavelength typically 214 or 220 nanometres |
| Identity method | Mass spectrometry | Confirms peptide mass and copper content |
Analytical confirmation usually combines a separation method with a copper-specific measurement. Liquid chromatography or mass spectrometry establishes peptide identity and purity, while an elemental measurement quantifies the metal content. A frequent misconception is that any blue solution contains an intact copper peptide complex; color alone does not confirm structure, because free copper salts and degraded mixtures can also appear colored. Literature on efficacy is mixed, with in vitro findings often more dramatic than human evidence, and reviews note small sample sizes and short follow-up. Open questions include optimal concentration, skin penetration, and long-term effects.
Proposed mechanisms for copper peptide activity center on delivery of copper ions to cells and on peptide fragments acting as signaling molecules. Copper is a cofactor for enzymes involved in collagen cross-linking and antioxidant defense, and the peptide may improve its availability at target sites. Separately, the tripeptide and its breakdown products have been reported to influence gene expression in cultured fibroblasts. Much of this evidence comes from laboratory cell cultures and animal models rather than controlled human trials. The relative contribution of the copper ion and the peptide sequence is therefore not fully settled.
Research interest in GHK-Cu centers on its ability to deliver copper and to influence cellular processes in laboratory models. In cell culture and animal studies, the complex has been linked to collagen synthesis, antioxidant enzyme activity, and expression of genes associated with tissue remodeling. These effects are not equivalent to proven clinical outcomes. The mechanisms proposed include copper transfer to cuproenzymes, modulation of growth factor signaling, and interactions with extracellular matrix components. How much of the observed activity depends on intact GHK-Cu versus free copper or free peptide is not fully resolved.
The compound entered scientific literature in the 1970s, when plasma factors with copper-binding activity were isolated and characterized. Later work expanded into wound healing, skin biology, and cosmetic formulation, where copper tripeptide-1 became a recognized ingredient name. Most published studies remain preclinical or small-scale, and findings are often reported in specialized dermatology or peptide journals. Regulatory treatment varies: some jurisdictions allow it as a cosmetic ingredient, while research-grade material is sold for laboratory use. Questions about optimal delivery, target tissues, and long-term effects continue to be investigated rather than settled.
GHK-Cu is a coordination complex formed between the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine and a copper(II) ion. The peptide sequence is often abbreviated Gly-His-Lys, and the copper is bound through the histidine imidazole nitrogen and adjacent peptide nitrogens. The complex is frequently described as a 1:1 peptide-to-copper species. It occurs naturally in human plasma, saliva, and urine at low concentrations. Its endogenous levels have been reported to decline with age, although the precise physiological role of that change remains an open question.
Solid GHK-Cu is generally stored as a dry powder under frozen conditions to limit degradation. The peptide bond can hydrolyze, and the copper center can be displaced by strong chelators such as EDTA. Aqueous solutions are less stable than the solid and may lose color or form precipitates over time. Temperature, pH, and oxygen exposure are the main variables that affect shelf life. Neutral to slightly acidic conditions tend to preserve the complex better than strongly alkaline media.
Routine handling calls for minimizing freeze-thaw cycles and preparing solutions shortly before use. Glass or inert plastic containers reduce adsorption and metal leaching. Working stocks are often kept at 2–8 °C for short periods, while long-term reference material stays at −20 °C or below. Light protection is prudent because prolonged exposure may accelerate oxidation of the peptide. Documentation of lot number, concentration, and preparation date supports reproducibility in laboratory work.
== Names == The prodrug candesartan cilexetil is marketed by AstraZeneca and Takeda Pharmaceuticals, commonly under the trade names Blopress, Atacand, Amias, and Ratacand. It is available in generic form.
== Prognosis == Mortality in affected felid litters varies between 20 and 100%. Mortality of FPLV is 25–90% in domestic cats with the acute form of the disease and up to 100% in cats with peracute disease. In 2010, a retrospective study of 244 infected cats showed that "leukocyte and thrombocyte counts as well as serum albumin and potassium concentrations at presentation are prognostic indicators in cats with panleukopenia, whereas vaccination status, age, clinical signs, and housing conditions are not." A survival rate of about 50% has been reported with supportive therapies. Cats with FPLV that survive the first five days of treatment usually recover; however, the decrease in the cat's white blood cells compromises its immune system, leaving it vulnerable to secondary infection. Lifelong immunity is thought to follow recovery from disease, and a carrier state of the disease has never been identified.
In response to declining sales, in 2017 the company launched a fast casual spinoff of its format called "Hoots". Hoots is distinguished from its original concept primarily by a reduction in menu items and employment of both male and female servers who are modestly dressed in t-shirts and khakis.
=== Mood, anxiety, learning === Substance P has been associated with the regulation of mood disorders, anxiety, stress, reinforcement, neurogenesis, synaptic growth and dendritic arborisation, respiratory rhythm, neurotoxicity, pain, and nociception. In 2014, it was found that Substance P played a role in male fruit fly aggression. Recently, it has been shown that Substance P may play a critical role in long-term potentiation of aversive stimuli.
Dr (Heinz) Wuschech knows more about anabolic steroids than any doctor I have ever met, and yet he cannot discuss them openly any more than Geoff Capes or Mac Wilkins can openly discuss them in the current climate of amateur sports regulation. What I did learn in East Germany was that they feel there is little danger from anabolica, as they call it, when the athletes are kept on strictly monitored programmes. Although the extremely dangerous side-effects are admitted, they are statistically no more likely to occur than side-effects from the birth control pill. If, that is, programmes are constantly medically monitored as to dosage. Other reports came from the occasional athlete who fled to the West – 15 of them between 1976 and 1979. One, the ski-jumper Hans-Georg Aschenbach, said: "Long-distance skiers start having injections to their knees from the age 14 because of their intensive training." He said: "For every Olympic champion, there are at least 350 invalids. There are gymnasts among the girls who have to wear corsets from the age of 18 because their spine and their ligaments have become so worn... There are young people so worn out by the intensive training that they come out of it mentally blank [lessivés – washed out], which is even more painful than a deformed spine." After the 1990 German reunification, on 26 August 1993 the records were opened and evidence found that the Stasi, the state secret police, supervised systematic doping of East German athletes from 1971 until reunification in 1990.

Pipecolic acid (piperidine-2-carboxylic acid) is an organic compound with the formula HNC5H9CO2H. It is a carboxylic acid derivative of piperidine and, as such, an amino acid, although one not encoded genetically. Like many other α-amino acids, pipecolic acid is chiral, although the S-stereoisomer is more common. It is a colorless solid. Its biosynthesis starts from lysine. CRYM, a taxon-specific protein that also binds thyroid hormones, is involved in the pipecolic acid pathway.

=== Tendon treatment === Several studies have shown a correlation between the administration of bone growth factors and the amelioration of the tendon-to-bone healing. The focus of these studies was primarily on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) located in the knee, due to the high number of injuries sustained by athletes. The University of Dammam, King Fahd Hospital in Saudi Arabia was able to show that the addition of SHMSP bone growth factor via powder facilitated the process of tendon-graft healing in rabbits. Comparison of this SHMSP test group to the control group illustrated a higher level of formation and organization within the knee. The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York conducted a similar study, in which a collagen sponge containing bone protein was implanted in the ACL of rabbits. In this case, the bone protein isolated from bovine femurs contained several bone morphogenetic proteins, which are part of an important signaling system that aides in the structure of bones. As with the application of SHMSP, the inclusion of bone protein in the collagen sponge was seen to improve the healing process, when compared to control groups with the sponge alone or no sponge. In a separate study also implemented by the Hospital for Special Surgery as well as the University of California, treatment of the anterior cruciate ligament utilized the recombinant human bone morphogenic protein rhBMP-2 in two phases.
=== South America === Patricio Pazmiño, the Interior Minister of Ecuador, stated that the February 2021 riots at three prisons that took 79 lives were related to Mexican and Colombian drug gangs. The government intercepted a record 126 tons of cocaine in 2020. On September 8, 2021, National Prosecutor Jorge Abbott declared that Mexican cartels were attempting to establish themselves in Chile. It is known that Sinaloa Cartel has attempted to use Chile as a transit route for the shipment of cocaine to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The activity of the CJNG includes an attempt at establishing a drug laboratory in Iquique as well as the import of marihuana through the port of San Antonio.
== Pharmacological modulation == Neutral endopeptidase (NEP) also known as neprilysin is the enzyme that metabolizes natriuretic peptides. Several inhibitors of NEP are currently being developed to treat disorders ranging from hypertension to heart failure. Most of them are dual inhibitors (NEP and ACE). In 2014, PARADIGM-HF study was published in NEJM. This study considered as a landmark study in treatment of heart failure. The study was double blinded; compared LCZ696 versus enalapril in patients with heart failure. The study showed lower all cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality and hospitalization in LCZ696 arm. Omapatrilat (dual inhibitor of NEP and angiotensin-converting enzyme) developed by BMS did not receive FDA approval due to angioedema safety concerns. Other dual inhibitors of NEP with ACE/angiotensin receptor are (in 2003) being developed by pharmaceutical companies.

Phage therapy is the therapeutic use of bacteriophages to treat pathogenic bacterial infections. Phage therapy has many potential applications in human medicine as well as dentistry, veterinary science, and agriculture. Phage therapy relies on the use of naturally occurring bacteriophages to infect and lyse bacteria at the site of infection in a host. Due to current advances in genetics and biotechnology these bacteriophages can possibly be manufactured to treat specific infections. Phages can be bioengineered to target multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, and their use involves the added benefit of preventing the elimination of beneficial bacteria in the human body. Phages destroy bacterial cell walls and membrane through the use of lytic proteins which kill bacteria by making many holes from the inside out. Bacteriophages can even possess the ability to digest the biofilm that many bacteria develop that protect them from antibiotics to effectively infect and kill bacteria. Bioengineering can play a role in creating successful bacteriophages. Understanding the mutual interactions and evolutions of bacterial and phage populations in the environment of a human or animal body is essential for rational phage therapy. Bacteriophagics are used against antibiotic resistant bacteria in Georgia (George Eliava Institute) and in one institute in Wrocław, Poland. Bacteriophage cocktails are common drugs sold over the counter in pharmacies in eastern countries.
Psychotherapy involves a formal relationship between professional and client—usually an individual, couple, family, or small group—that employs a set of procedures intended to form a therapeutic alliance, explore the nature of psychological problems, and encourage new ways of thinking, feeling, or behaving. Clinicians have a wide range of individual interventions to draw from, often guided by their training—for example, a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) clinician might use worksheets to record distressing cognitions, a psychoanalyst might encourage free association, while a psychologist trained in Gestalt techniques might focus on immediate interactions between client and therapist. Clinical psychologists generally seek to base their work on research evidence and outcome studies as well as on trained clinical judgment. Although there are literally dozens of recognized therapeutic orientations, their differences can often be categorized on two dimensions: insight vs. action and in-session vs. out-session.

Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is the most common approach. Purity is expressed as a share of total peak area at a specified wavelength. Mass spectrometry is then used to confirm molecular identity.
Solid material is often held at refrigerator or freezer temperatures, typically between minus 20 and 4 degrees Celsius. Desiccation limits moisture uptake. Solution stability is generally shorter and varies with pH and buffer composition.
Electron paramagnetic resonance is suited to copper(II) because of its unpaired electron. UV-visible spectroscopy reveals ligand-to-metal charge transfer bands. Both methods report on coordination rather than on peptide purity.
It is a complex of a three-amino-acid peptide, glycine, histidine and lysine, bound to a single copper(II) ion. The metal is held mainly by the histidine side chain and the peptide backbone. Most commercial material is supplied as an acetate salt rather than as the free complex.
